Happy July!
A few things to update you on.
Earlier this month, we had the MO conference at a venue on Chancery Lane – thanks to Bevan Brittan for sponsoring and thanks to all the amazing speakers and to our Vice President Helen Bradley for chairing. It was a great day and lovely to see so many of our members.
The government has been busy – the long-awaited English Devolution (and, it seems, Community Empowerment) Bill has been published. If you were hoping that the Bill would simplify the tangled web of law which applies to combined authorities, then you will have been disappointed. Instead, it manages the fantastic achievement of making the law even more complicated. It also proposes the abolition of the committee system and, slightly surprisingly, bans upwards only rent reviews of commercial property leases.
Although the government have said they will legislate to permit remote meetings, they haven’t managed to put that in the bill. We think that means there must be another bill waiting not far behind.
Elsewhere, we are working at pace to recruit someone to lead the work on the professional body for MOs. We know our membership tells us that this is something they really want. We know we need to build something that provides support to enable Monitoring Officers to be successful in these challenging and difficult times.
Finally, many congratulations to Deborah Evans, our Chief Executive, who has been appointed as the Chair of the Pensions Ombudsman. It’s a fantastic opportunity for her and we are very proud. LLG members are not to worry - we won’t be losing her services as both her LLG role and her new role are part-time and she can fit both into her busy schedule.
That’s all for now, but if you’re away over the next few weeks, I’d like to wish you a good and well-deserved break.
LLG President
