Next Friday, 7th March, LLG will be holding its Leadership Conference online, featuring sessions from distinguished speakers on the most current issues facing those in senior and leadership roles within local authorities. A particular highlight of the afternoon session will be led by Zara Mohammed, former Secretary General of the Muslim Council of Britain, who will address the challenges faced by women in leadership and the resilience required to succeed.
Zara Mohammed is a master's graduate in Human Rights Law and a Training and Development Consultant. Elected as the first female, first Scottish, and youngest Secretary-General of the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) in February 2021, she has made significant contributions to the organisation, which is committed to working for the common good of society as a whole. The MCB encourages individual Muslims and Muslim organisations to play a full and participatory role in public life, with a vision statement of “empowering Muslim communities to achieving a just, cohesive and successful British society.”
Zara is passionate about community change, empowering young people, and enhancing diversity and inclusion both within her communities and beyond. During her tenure, she has addressed key issues impacting British Muslims across mainstream media and publications. She was a keynote speaker at the G20 interfaith summit and featured in Vogue’s list of the 25 most influential women in the UK. After working in the charitable sector for several years, Zara has established a consultancy focused on developing excellence in leadership, improving governance, and advancing equality and diversity in the workplace.
I am eagerly anticipating hearing Zara's insights and learning from her experiences. Her blogs are particularly engaging, and one memorable line stands out: “Life can be hard enough, so forgive yourself for yesterday’s mistakes and be present to today’s opportunity. The week isn’t up yet.”
