As we move further into what continues to be a dynamic and demanding year for local government legal professionals, it is clear that our sector remains both resilient and indispensable. Across England and Wales, legal teams are navigating an increasingly complex landscape: from evolving regulatory frameworks and continued financial pressures on local authorities, to the growing expectations around governance, transparency and public accountability. These challenges are significant, but they also highlight the critical role that our profession plays in enabling sound decision making and safeguarding the public interest.

At LLG, we continue to see first-hand the ingenuity, dedication and professionalism that define our members. Whether advising on major regeneration projects, supporting social care decisions, managing litigation risk, or driving innovation in service delivery, local government lawyers are at the heart of progress in our communities. It is something we should all take immense pride in.

Against this backdrop, I am particularly looking forward to attending the LLG Spring Conference next week in Birmingham. The conference is always a highlight in our calendar, and this year promises to be no exception. It offers a valuable opportunity to come together as a profession: to share knowledge, exchange ideas, and reflect on both the challenges and opportunities ahead. In an environment where workloads can be heavy and time is often limited, taking the space to connect with colleagues from across the country is more important than ever.

The programme this year reflects the breadth of issues facing our sector, and I know it will prompt thoughtful discussion and practical insight. Equally important, however, is the sense of community that the conference fosters. There is something uniquely energising about being in a room with peers who understand the complexities of the work we do and who share a common commitment to public service.

The conference also provides an opportunity to celebrate excellence through the LLG Awards. These Awards are a vital part of recognising the outstanding achievements of individuals and teams across our sector. I would like to extend my warmest congratulations to all those who have been shortlisted this year. Being recognised by your peers in this way is a significant achievement, and it speaks volumes about the quality and impact of your work.

Celebrating success is not just about acknowledging individual accomplishments: it is about reinforcing the value of the profession as a whole. In a sector that is often under pressure, it is essential that we take the time to recognise and share best practice, innovation and dedication. By doing so, we inspire others, strengthen our community, and demonstrate the vital contribution that local government lawyers make every day.

I wish all the finalists the very best of luck and encourage all of us to take pride in our work; support one another and continue to champion the important role we play in shaping and supporting our local communities.

I look forward to seeing many of you at the conference.

Best wishes

Helen Bradley
LLG President
