Lawyers are known for their dedication, focus, and accuracy, but this commitment can come at the cost of neglecting their well-being. With this in mind, LLG would like to bring your attention to “How Lawyers Can Better Manage Their Mental Health”, a short video by Crafty Counsel. Two senior in-house lawyers, Claire Carless and Ed Goold sit down with Karen Glass to shed light on the challenges faced by lawyers and the importance of maintaining perspective, particularly on difficult days.

As Ed points out, Lawyers are trained to carry out tasks in a certain way which requires extreme focus, intensity, and absolute accuracy. This rigorous training can inadvertently encourage a certain tunnel vision that can be challenging to recognise, let alone alleviate. The panel discuss the importance of actively cultivating and maintaining perspective to overcome this tunnel vision. By taking a step back, remembering the bigger picture, and acknowledging that setbacks and tough days are inevitable, lawyers may be able to mitigate the detrimental effects of tunnel vision.

The panel also discuss support networks and consider what an organisation can do to help staff with managing their mental health offering valuable suggestions that could be implemented into a Local Authority.
