01 May: Online – Housing Law Conference

Sessions also address Temporary Accommodation Pressures and Legal Risk, providing guidance on procurement, suitability, and defensible decision-making amid rising demand and budget pressures. The latest homelessness case law update will highlight emerging principles and their practical implications for assessments, relief duties, and review processes. Awaab’s Law is covered in detail, with practical advice for operational readiness, governance, and compliance across housing, legal, and environmental health teams.
The Heat Network Regulatory Regime will be explored and will break down Ofgem requirements into clear actions for compliance, consumer protection, and operational efficiency.
The conference will conclude with Social Tenant Access to Information (STAIRs), offering guidance on delivering transparency, meeting phased obligations, and integrating these duties with data protection and FOI law.
This training course will provide an introduction to the Council/committee structure, including the purpose and composition of committees and how they fit into the work of the Council. We will move on to consider an overview of decision-making, including the different types of decisions committees can make. We will include discussions on issues such as dealing with interests, public access to committee information and the types of committee information that should/should not be published, minutes etc. The day will include practical considerations of your role, including how best you can support councillors who sit on committees. We will cover the basics of the relevant legislation and discuss practical examples of issues you might have to deal with, including discussion of relevant case studies.
14 May: Online - Navigating Data Protection Law
This course will provide a solid foundation in data protection law for local authority lawyers and officers. The course will include an explanation of the key provisions of GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018; an exploration of the requirements of data protection impact assessments including around consultation and implementation; data sharing and the interaction with Freedom of Information; and breach reporting. The course will be useful for those who are new to dealing with data protection and information management, as well as those who have some limited experience or are in need of a refresher.
This training course will cover key issues and considerations for local government lawyers when dealing with local authority companies from set up through to exit management. It will draw on practical examples to demonstrate the issues and how to deal with them. A key theme that the course will explore is how the local authority and the company interact – in good times and in bad – and how probity and good governance can be demonstrated.
The course content will cover the strategic context of why local authorities set up or participate in separate companies, the process of setting up a company including its purpose, powers, and structures, and governance aspects such as documentation, directors, shareholders/members, control versus freedom, and conflicts of interest. It will also address practical considerations like funding, resources, property, procurement and subsidy control, delivery, disputes, and exit planning. Additionally, the session will highlight potential pitfalls and red flags, concluding with a Q&A opportunity.
