LLG Seeks Junior National Lead

Role Profile

  1. To be the public face of LLG and represent the voice of Junior Lawyers (under 5 years PQE or pre-qualification).
  2. To be responsible for the leadership, and overall activity of Junior Lawyers within LLG, driving a more engaged and service focused delivery.   
  3. To work closely with the Junior Director for LLG.
  4. To attend meetings of the Junior Lawyer group and encouraging membership engagement.
  5. To produce reports for the LLG Board where necessary.
  6. To contribute towards the shaping of LLG Work Experience Week, Junior Lawyers Programme at the Spring Conference and bespoke Junior Training.  
  7. To engage and work with Corporate Partners and Stakeholders.
  8. To participate where necessary in roundtables and working groups.

In addition, the Junior National Lead will automatically become the Junior Director on the Board of LLG from the AGM in 2028 for a two-year term. Regard should therefore be had to the role of Junior Director and the Board Director Role Description.

This position will require responding to the occasional email and attending webinars during the working day. Applicants are therefore encouraged to discuss this role with their line manager and seek support to undertake it.

Criteria

1.Must be a full member of Lawyers in Local Government under 5 years PQE at the time of application.

2.Must be currently actively working within Local Government

3.Must be capable of holding a director position in England and Wales under company law

4.Must have some understanding of the work of LLG and its aims and objectives

5.Should have some understanding of the current challenges facing local government lawyers

6.Strong interpersonal skills and leadership qualities

 

 

The role is not remunerated, but expenses will be paid in line with the company’s expense policy for directors.

 

Appointment

This position is an elected position by the Junior membership of LLG, and all applicants will be placed before the membership and the candidate with the highest number of votes will be appointed as the LLG National Lead for the first two years, leading automatically without further vote to the LLG Junior Director on the Board of LLG for the following two years. In total, this is a four-year commitment.


With these factors in mind, should you wish to be considered as the Junior National Lead, please set out in no more than two sides of A4 a written application demonstrating, with examples where possible, the following:

  • Ability to take an interest in and represent LLG Junior Members.
  • Commitment to LLG and the local government sector.
  • Capacity to represent LLG effectively with Corporate Partners and Stakeholders (Stakeholders include LGA, LGSCO,CIPFA, SOLACE, ADSO, AEA, RTIP, SRA, The Law Society and Central Government Departments);
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.

Timelines

 

12th February 2026           Closing Date for Applications

 

27th February 2026           Board will determine criteria met within applications and approve for member election where relevant

 

2nd March 2026                Candidates notified of outcome and elections launched to the LLG Junior Membership.

 

16th March 2026               Elections closed.

 

18th March 2026               Applicants notified of results and inductions scheduled.  

 

7th April 2026                    Notice of AGM with Special Resolution AGM

 

29th April 2026                  AGM and appointment as LLG Junior National Lead

 

AGM 2028                        The Junior National Lead is appointed the Junior Director for a two year term.

Role Description Board Director:

  • Play a full and active role in LLG, taking part in discussions and encouraging debate
  • Prepare well for meetings, reading papers and thinking through issues
  • Contribute in a considered and constructive way
  • Complete any action points as agreed and to timetable
  • Make decisions in the best interests of LLG for the good of the wider membership, not just your own authority
  • Ensure LLG is well run through appropriate challenge
  • Raise issues and questions in a sensitive way
  • Keep up to date with the workings of LLG and the local government sector
  • Act in good faith and be accountable for your actions
  • Respect majority decisions even when you are in the minority
  • Have a working knowledge of the company articles
  • Actively contribute to improving the governance of the board
  • Work to identify and encourage candidates to ensure succession to the board

 

When the successful applicant becomes the Junior Director in 2028, they will be asked to attend 6 board meetings a year (hybrid) and our two residential conferences (paid for) and be willing to communicate
