Lawyers in Local Government is deeply saddened by the recent social unrest that has rocked and divided our communities, following the untimely death of three innocent young children. The co-ordinated actions of a few are a direct attack on the core values of local government of democracy, community cohesion and inclusivity. The intimidation of lawyers puts our justice system under threat.
Councils are working hard to protect their communities, repair the damage, and alleviate the tensions that are being felt by many.
LLG President Aneeka Sarwar condemned the recent violence and said had been personally rocked by events which left her questioning her safety in her own city. She explained that “At LLG we believe in the fundamental importance of secure, safe and supportive communities and we strongly oppose racial discrimination of any kind. Lawyers have a right to feel safe in the workplace and should be respected, not vilified, for the important role that we play in championing the rights of the vulnerable”.
