The LGA is running an exciting project looking at how councils and other agencies can support councillors facing abuse and intimidation by the public. Researchers have already engaged in consultations with councillors, political officers, chief executives, local government lawyers, and other professionals, such as police officers, to identify different barriers and solutions to the issue of abuse against locally elected members. In the next phase of the project, we will be running two iterative workshops designed for officers interested in supporting councillors with this issue. Attendees should expect to come prepared to share their learning and learn from others about successful strategies as we work to develop new solutions, techniques and skills to enable councils to tackle this challenge and make local politics safe for all.
