The Trust was established in 1976 and was re-formed into a company limited by guarantee in 2013. The objects of the Trust include: -
“To promote and develop the role of solicitors and trainee solicitors employed in local government in legal, managerial and administrative capacities and to take appropriate action on all matters concerning their training professional development duties responsibilities remuneration and interests.”
“To pay or apply the trust fund at the absolute discretion of the Trustees to or for the benefit of solicitors and trainee solicitors in local government generally.”
All local government trainees and solicitors are eligible for support, provided the applicant is working in local government at the time the application for a grant is made to the Trust, and their application is supported by their employing local authority. Whilst each application is considered on its merits, the trustees look for commitment to local government from applicants and they give preference to courses providing the candidate with a qualification. Ordinarily up to 50% of a course fee is awarded by way of a bursary, although each application is considered on its merits. The Trust does not provide support for accommodation and travel costs to courses. The 2023 strategy review means some LLG courses are now eligible for support.
Support given in 2023:
The Trust received six applications and all six individuals were offered bursaries. Only two offers were taken up, amounting to £2,471.80. The remaining individuals did not pursue their application in 2023.
A prize is awarded to the best candidate from local government who reaches a standard approved by the Course Tutors in all aspects of the Local Government Diploma Course. Congratulations to Robert Code of Liverpool City Council who won the Trust’s annual prize of £250 for the 2022-23 course.
The Trust also provided financial support to the LLG website and bulletin.
