This course is available to trainee solicitors, paralegals, solicitor apprentices and junior lawyers who are LLG members and up to 5 years' PQE at a reduced rate of £75 + VAT. All junior lawyers are entitled to free membership of LLG. Please email bookings@llg.org.uk

This course will provide attendees with an understanding of the foundations and principles of public rights of way. This will include the relevant legislation, case law and procedures. Attendees will look at the role of the local authority as acting as surveying authority advising their council officers and members on public rights of way.

The course will cover:

  • What are public rights of way

  • How they come into being

  • Definitive Map and Statement

  • Application for a modification order

  • User evidence and documentary evidence

  • How to make changes to the rights of way network

This course is aimed primarily at local government lawyers and rights of way officers who wish to understand the public rights of way framework. By the end of the course the attendees will have a good understanding of the legislation and the key principles and will feel equipped to provide advice on public rights of way.

Umi Filby

Associate, Womble Bond Dickinson

Umi is an experienced solicitor who has worked within local government for 17 years. Whilst in local government, her practice included regularly drafting planning and highway agreements, drafting traffic regulation orders, advising at planning and rights of way committees and representing her local authority at public local inquiries. She is now an Associate Solicitor in the planning and infrastructure team at Womble Bond Dickinson.
