The Right to Buy/Right to Acquire is a complex area of law. This workshop assumes a basic level of knowledge of the RTB/RTA.  It will give attendees the opportunity to explore aspects of the Right to Buy and Right to Acquire in greater depth and exchange good practice.  There will also be an opportunity for attendees to bring their own difficult cases to the group to discuss the options available. The focus will be on active learning, collaboration and practical problem solving. 

The workshop will cover:

  • Encouraging a sustainable approach to home ownership

  • Cost floor level calculations

  • Interpreting and applying exclusions from the RTB/RTA

  • Demolition notices

  • Latest tribunal cases

  • Reducing fraud and pushing the boundaries

  • Exchange of good practice

  • Discussion of options available for complex cases

  • Outline and discussion on sale of leasehold extensions on RTB leases

  • Outline and discussion on sale of freeholds to RTB leaseholders

Emily Gasson

Solicitor and Trainer

Emily is a housing law consultant, trainer and solicitor providing advice to housing associations and local authorities. She specialises in the right to buy, right to acquire, fixed term tenancies, leasehold management, service charge collection, housing management, rent arrears and debt collection. Emily previously headed up the legal department at South Somerset Homes (now Yarlington) and worked in private practice for both tenants and landlords in the public and the private sectors.
