An exciting opportunity has arisen for two lawyers to join our legal services team at City of York Council. If you thrive in working in a busy environment and enjoy working as part of a team one of these roles may be ideal for you.

The roles will focus on one of the following areas of work:  contract & commercial (permanent, full time) OR planning (maternity backfill to January 2026), 3 days per week including Friday).

22 hours 12 minutes per week for Lawyer – Planning

37 hours per week for Lawyer – Contract/Commercial

The contract & commercial role will support the Council on a wide range of contractual and commercial matters including some exciting redevelopment projects taking place in York.  The team handles day to day commercial work as well as complex and high value project work.

The planning role will provide legal and professional support to the Council across several areas including planning, highways, rights of way and road traffic, environmental and licensing law. You will be involved in drafting planning and highways agreements, general planning and highways issues, enforcement issues and licensing hearings.

Both roles are ideal opportunities for a newly qualified solicitor or barrister, or someone with extensive experience in one of these areas of law.

You may have built your career and experience by working in the public sector but we also welcome applications from candidates who have not worked in the local government legal sector before, those who are looking for a career change or those who may be returning to work after a break.

Please indicate which area/s you are interested in on your application form (you do not need to complete a separate application form for each area).  If you are interested in more than one area, you may need to attend more than one interview.
