Key Responsibilities

SYMCA’s Senior Lawyers ensure that stakeholders receive high quality, targeted legal advice on the full range of public and regulatory law issues. The work involves supporting the delivery of the Organisations priorities and protecting the interests of the Mayor and the Combined Authority and its Subsidiary companies.
 
As Senior Lawyer you will provide high quality, targeted and accessible legal advice across a range of practice areas in order to secure and deliver effective solutions to legal issues. You will support the Director of Legal and Governance (Monitoring Officer) and Head of Legal by providing specialist legal advice on the Mayor’s PCC functions,  matters of regulatory compliance for the MCA, and public administrative law. You will lead and manage your own portfolio of matters, work with the wider team on larger legal projects and supervise the work of junior Lawyers or non-qualified junior members of the team. 
 
You’ll be responsible for proactively identifying legal issues at the earliest opportunity to support the planning and delivery of the Group and its subsidiary companies’ plans and activities. You will ensure the provision of effective legal support of a wide range of multi-disciplinary projects and programmes, including, the application and interpretation of legislation/guidance and negotiating effective contractual arrangements and other legal documentation.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

You’ll currently be a practising and qualified solicitor, barrister or Chartered Legal Executive with knowledge of the legal framework, the role, function and statutory powers of the Combined Authority. You will have experience of drafting complex legal documents with sound legal analysis and judgement and ability to adopt a strategic approach, and have  experience of advising on matters of regulatory and governance law including the Mayor’s PCC functions.
 
You’ll have experience of working, influencing and advising on structuring often complex legal transactions with the ability to communicate with Elected Members, partners, contractors, legal service providers and stakeholders at all levels.
