Local Authorities

Following on from the successes of the last three National Work Experience Weeks in 2021, 2022 and 2023 LLG are pleased to confirm that it will run for a fourth time in July 2024.

The scheme will take place in July 2024 and will run virtually, however, an option for in-person student placements will be available. The aim is to provide participants with an invaluable insight into the role of in-house Local Authority lawyers.

The impact of the scheme can be seen immediately, demonstrated by feedback received with 94% of students saying they are more likely to pursue a career in local government following their involvement in LLG’s National Work Experience Week. Furthermore, numerous students have successfully gained employment within local government, following the scheme. They also particularly enjoyed developing their practical skills through undertaking work with their assigned Local Authority and occasionally attending court hearings.

In 2022, thanks to the lifting of lockdown measures, some of our students were able to undertake in-person shadowing experience at their Local Authority. Students presented with this opportunity thoroughly enjoyed it as is evident by the feedback received by LLG. Although providing in-person experience is welcome, it is not mandatory for a Local Authority to accommodate to partake in the scheme.

Similarly, to previous years, each day will be split into two with the students spending the morning working with the Local Authority they have been assigned to, and the afternoon attending a range of online webinars and workshops, delivered by legal professionals in various areas of law. This will provide participants with the opportunity to gain a better understanding of the structure and legal work local authorities undertake. The scheme will present an opportunity for networking and insight into the legal profession.

Comparably, to previous years, the scheme will run on a remote basis however, we will try our best to assign students within a reasonable travel distance of their allocated Local Authority, should the opportunity to attend in person arise.

We would appreciate your help and support in inspiring a new generation of law students to enter the world of Local Government legal work.

You can support us in the following ways:

Local authorities will receive an information pack containing the details of their allocated student, their application form as well as a template programme, reference form and a confidentiality agreement to sign directly with the student.
